ReadOnly application Explanation of how it works. Starting from the top and working down. The top line (not the title bar) displays the path and folder that is currently selected. If the path and folder name is too long it is shortened as much as needed from the middle, leaving the drive and folder name at each end if possible. If this has occurred and the user holds the mouse over the panel a pop up hint supplies the full path. "Change folder" button: when clicked it pops up a Select Directory dialog box (this is a component supplied by Borland with the software development platform - hence the inconsistent reference to directory/folder). I don't think any explanation is required here except to say that the user can select a new folder. Read only check box: If this is clear, with NO check mark, (the default setting) the read only flags will be cleared on all the files and folders in the selected folder when the "Apply" button is clicked. If it is checked the read only flags will be set. (***WARNING*** As one user pointed out they inadvertently set all the read only flags on their C: drive. Fortunately they spotted it before turning off their computer. They proposed that this may have been disastrous. I do not know if Windows overcomes this potential hazard automatically but I am not about to test it myself. I would be grateful if anyone knows if they would inform me and anyway I will look into the matter. If I can ascertain that there is a problem I will do something about it) Subfolders check box: If this is set (default setting) then the current folder and all subfolders contained within are affected. If it is clear then only the current folder is affected. "Count files" button: when clicked the application counts all of the files and folders contained within the current folder and all subfolders and files. The information is then displayed under the button. It always counts all subfolder information but only reports the numbers relative to the setting of the Subfolder check box. So if the Subfolder check box is clear it always reports zero subfolders (there may be subfolders in the folder but they are not going to be affected so they are not reported). The report states how many subfolders (zero if Subfolders check box clear) are contained within the folder (and subfolders ad infinitum), how many files are contained within the folder (including files in sub folders if Subfolder check box is set) and it reports on how many files will be affected if the "Apply" button is clicked. So if the Read only check box is clear it will report how many files have their read only flag set and will have it cleared when "Apply" is clicked. Conversely if the Read only check box is set it will report the number of files that have their read only flag clear and will have it set when "Apply" is clicked. "About" button: when clicked displays the about box. And what a jolly elegant about box it is too. It does request that you email us - preferably with a comment - so that we have an idea how many folks use it - and what they think of it. Oh and if you type QUOTE whilst it is the active form you get a quote. There's no point in it being secret if nobody knows! "Apply" button: when clicked does the work according to the selected folder and how the two check boxes are set. Incidentally I have found that, although folders can have their read only flag set and cleared, they are not set when copying from a CD (not in my experience to date). So this application only changes file flags and does not touch folder flags. When the "Apply" button is clicked a "Confirm" dialog box pops up warning the user that there is no undo and offering the user the option to continue or abort. To have an undo function would involve storing all the filenames and would produce significant slowdown in the operation. It would also create huge files to store the information etc. "Exit" button: when clicked closes the application. Please send us an email telling us what you think of the software. Can you speak German and English? |

have had a number of German speaking people request the instructions for
SenLab and ReadOnly in German. If you could and would like to do a quick translation of about 1 page of instructions for each (or either) please email me at . |
